Windows Microphone Privacy: Fix Access Without Broad Resets
If a microphone stopped working after a privacy change, first check permission for the actual calling or recording app. A privacy block and the wrong audio-input selection can produce similar symptoms.

Check the relevant access layers
- Open the Microphone page under Windows 11 Privacy & security or Windows 10 Privacy.
- Check device microphone access and the setting that allows apps to use it.
- Enable access only for the intended listed app, or review desktop-app access for a desktop program.
- For a browser call, review the specific website’s microphone permission.
- Select the correct input device in the app and make a short recording or test call.
Separate permission from audio routing
A headset, webcam, and laptop can expose different microphones. If the Windows permission is enabled but there is no useful audio, confirm the chosen input, mute button, and application input level before changing system-wide privacy switches.
If WPD changed the access setting
Use the bundled control description and restore the recorded microphone permission rather than applying a broad default preset. Recheck the Windows page afterward. If the control changes back, investigate the utility or management policy responsible instead of repeatedly toggling it.
Questions and answers
Why does one calling site fail while another works?
Each site can have its own browser permission, even when Windows permits the browser to use the microphone.
Will enabling access fix a muted headset?
Not by itself. Hardware mute and application input selection need separate checking.
