WPD Filtering Modes: Firewall Rules and Recovery

Windows Filtering Platform is a filtering infrastructure, while Windows Defender Firewall exposes policies and rules that users can manage. A WPD filtering-mode label is not a reason to turn off Windows security services.

Identify which mechanism was changed

  1. Record the WPD mode, selected rule category, and time of the change.
  2. Inspect Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security for any rule created there. Do not assume every filtering mode is represented by the same rule list.
  3. Test the affected connection and compare it with the state before your change.
  4. Reverse the specific restriction through its original control. Recheck security status and the application afterward.

Keep recovery scoped

Do not use a whole-firewall reset as the first response to one blocked app. Other software and workplace management can own rules that you need. A rule export is helpful for Windows Defender Firewall rules but is not proof that every third-party filtering state has been backed up.
